Wolf Point Straight Bourbon Whiskey

SINGLE BARREL

THE STORY
At the confluence of the North, South, & Main branches of the Chicago River, you will find a historically significant area of the city called “Wolf Point.”

Wolf Point was central to the early development of Chicago, from its humble beginnings as a settlement in the late 18th century to its incorporation as a city in 1837.

It was home to the city’s first tavern, theater, hotel, pharmacy, trans-river bridge, and much more. The true origin of the name “Wolf Point” is unknown, but there are three prevailing theories:

  • THEORY 1 | Settlers claimed the name arose from a Potawatomi Chief from the area named “Moa-Way,” which means “Wolf.” The Potawatomi were known as “Keepers of the Sacred Fire” due to their designated duty within their tribal alliance. After migrating from Wisconsin in the 1690s, they used the strategic position of Wolf Point as a thriving fur trading port with the French. At the time, the untamed region was flush with wild onion, which the Potawatomi called “Shegagosh.”

  • THEORY 2 | One of the theories comes from a tavern built on the west bank of the river in 1828 by John Kinzie. Through the years, it passed without a name through various landlords until it came under the management of William Walters. Around 1833, Walters hung a sign with the image of a wolf outside the tavern. It was said to honor a previous landlord’s singlehanded victory against a vicious wolf that invaded their meat house during the day. From then on, the tavern and the region became known as “Wolf Point.”

  • THEORY 3 | Some say that a soldier stationed at Fort Dearborn in the early 1800s created the name after observing wolves gather nearby at night. Fort Dearborn was a wooden stockade constructed in 1803 on the south bank of the Chicago River. The structure stood until 1812, when it was destroyed during a battle in the War of 1812. A second fort was constructed in 1816, which remained until the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Almost 70 years later, in 1939, Chicago added a star to their flag in honor of Fort Dearborn.

DESIGN
All three theories are represented on each bank of the Chicago River, with Theory 1 as the main focal point of our Single Barrel Release. The Wolf is positioned next to the fire symbolizing “Keepers of the Sacred Fire.” Wild onion is shown sprouting throughout the region.

The label will “rotate” between the theories, with our future Bourbon Blend and Rye highlighting Theory 2 and Theory 3.
