THE STORY
In the early 1900s, thousands of Christmas trees from Northern Michigan and Wisconsin were shipped to cities bordering the shores of the Great Lakes. The city of Chicago welcomed over a dozen schooners each year, with the most famous ship recognized as “The Christmas Tree Ship.” The captain of this ship was well-known for his generosity and compassion, often giving away trees to churches and families who could not afford to purchase them. He became known as “Captain Santa.”
In 1912, The Christmas Tree Ship set sail on its last journey. The vessel was overpowered by coastal waters, ultimately leading to the untimely destruction of the ship.
The ship’s legacy lived on through Captain Santa’s wife and two daughters, as they continued the annual tradition for several years after the wreckage. Today, each year, there is a commemorative voyage from Northern Michigan to Chicago’s Navy Pier to donate Christmas trees to families who would otherwise be without one. Through this symbolic gesture, the spirit and joy of Captain Santa and his Christmas Tree Ship lives on.
DESIGN
A picturesque view of the Christmas Tree Ship, a three-mast schooner, docked along the Chicago River. Captain Santa can be seen at the head of the ship, greeting patrons who are waiting to take home a tree of their own.
